There’s no communicato about this “joint” except from Yelp.
And the Yelp reviews are mostly written by Koreans, which, usually is great… Even greater? I know most of the reviewers: VNS Chicken on yelp, even the ones who slammed the restaurant. Jin Y came to dinner with us @ Thai Issan. Alyssa Min is friends w/ the sassyclassyflashy.com ‘s blogger..
But!!! I love this place. It’s NOT quite KoreanFriedChicken, it’s NOT quite tungdalk (electrocuted rotisserie chicken) but really, with the Electrolux Air-O-Speed convection ovens: http://professional.electroluxusa.com/node681.asp?ProdID=5169, the chicken comes out exactly the same EVERY single time. Matched that to a fiery franchised sauce from Korea (VONS website: here), it’s a model of franchise perfection.
But let’s talk about why I like it: 2 chopped up hen for $18 is the daily special ($2 off). 14 small pieces of chicken available in the standard flavor (roasted with marinade, but needs sauce), or the “Spicy BBQ” flavor. You think BonChon is spicy? Negative. Kyochon spicy? Not even close. TBBC spicy? Well , hells yes.. but this is just as spicy as TBBC’s chicken, except without the accompanying HUGE downhill alert. Add a little redness to TBBC’s sauce, add a little sugariness to TBBC’s sauce and you have
VONS, errr… VNS kitchen
The tiny whole hen ppl bitched about on Yelp? No longer offered, not even as the $0.99 special add-on when you ordered any regular menu. Why was it cold and rubbery? Cuz every greedy, cheap Korean wanted the $0.99 hen speshul, so they were pre-bbq’ing ’em all day for the dinner rush… Now? not an issue.
We like this place. A lot. My bunghole the next day? Not so much.
Opened: June of ’08 in the Koreantown Market, NOT the 3rd floor messhall.
