Spectrum Wine Auctions, a relatively new division of Spectrum Group International, purveyor of numismatics, “philately, and fine arms and militaria”, becomes an instant key player in the West Coast auction market with the hiring of Amanda Keston, previously of Zachys Wine Auctions, and the upcoming 5500 bottle auction anchored by highlights from Aubrey McClendon’s great collection.

Aubrey McClendon, co-founder of Chesapeake Energy, is considered by wine world luminaries to be the greatest American wine collector, with an extensive collection highlighted by the best vintages of French Bordeaux and Burgundy, as well as Napa selections. The previous 2 auctions tied to Mr. McClendon were in March and April, for a total bottle count of nearly 9000. The event, being simul is sure to bring worldwide attention.

Some PR facts:

· It’s a simply outstanding collection—5500 bottles; 3900 bottles from collector Aubrey McClendon.
· At 686 lots, the estimate on the auction is $3 MILLION
· Spectrum Wine Auctions, a new division of respected auction concern Spectrum Global Industries (SGI) in Orange County is handling it. It’s their debut live auction from the wine division, an incredible coup over other houses.

That’s a lot of wine. And a lot of money. I love my wine, but I don’t know if I could ever drink wine that costs that much. I suppose if somebody else paid for the bottle I could.
