Most single-focused food magazines don’t hold much of my interest nowadays as the Atlantic, the New Yorker, and even Slate are all producing more interesting reads, until this piece.

Taipei Family Style
came in the plastic wrapped May issue of Saveur. It was actually a really short read, and I really suggest anyone who’s any remotely obsessed with street food (this is way dirtier than the hawker stands of Singapore!) to give this a read. Above is a bowl of “lu rou fan”, ie, slow soy stewed ground pork over rice. Please note, Saveur’s recipe is CLEARLY wrong, as no one I know makes this dish with “soybean paste”. Soy sauce yes, soy bean paste, NO.

SoCal Culinary Historians are hosting a free public talk on the “golden era” (cause it’s always better back in the days) of LA Times Food Section.

The Culinary Historians of Southern California present

Betsy Balsley, Donna Deane, Rose Dosti and Barbara Hansen:
The L.A. Times Food Section Gals speaking on
The Heyday of the Food Section at the Los Angeles Times

Saturday, April 10th, 10:30 am at the Los Angeles Public Library
Mark Taper Auditorium, Downtown Central Branch
630 W. 5th St.

Free and open to the public

With over 100 work years of combined experience, the team of Betsy Balsley, Donna Deane, Rose Dosti and Barbara Hansen produced the Los Angeles Times Food section in its heyday beginning in the late sixties, into the 1980′s. During this era the food section had 40 to 50 pages every week, with popular columns such as Culinary SOS and Borderlines and dozens of original recipes. Recipes were prepared for publication in a magnificent test kitchen. The LA Times Food Gals will reminisce about this extraordinary era of food journalism, the resources they had to produce a great food section.

FWIW: Ms. Hansen’s still actively writing for the LA Weekly.

Some dood from Chowhound alerted me to the Saveur piece, but after glancing what little was online, I gave up. Guess I’ll browse the hardcopy next time.

It’s very difficult finding a half decent bowl of LRF in NorCal, then again people aren’t spending the hours or days stewing and using good “lu bao” bags of herb, and the pork in Taiwan is like unbeatable (vs the typical pork here). Is it as bad where you are with finding a good bowl? Soybean paste? Isn’t that miso?? Or doubanjiang? ;-) I hope it’s a typo by the mag.

Btw great info and find on that er ah jien (EAJ?) Lou Bian Taan shoppe…I hope they take off! Wish we had that kind of setup where I live.

Bummed that I missed Sat’s event. I was looking forward to it. I had Monsier Egg at the Street Food shindig and I have to say, I throughly enjoyed it. It was greasy, runny, and just f-in good.
